JUNE ‘08 ARCHIVE

I just love the stage of life that Abby’s in right now.  She’s so cute & she amazes us daily with the things she can do & the things that she says.  Here are some of the cute things she’s done lately:

  • Abby hasn’t been too thrilled to put her pajamas on lately.  So, one day we told her she didn’t have to put on her pajamas & that she could just put her evening lounge ware on.  She liked that idea, so we put pant & shirt pajamas on her instead of her pajamas with feet.    Now we tell her it’s time for bed & she says, “I want to wear evening lounge ware.”  It’s really cute.

  • Abby’s started playing a lot more lately all by herself.  One of her favorite toys is her doll house.  She has three plastic dolls that go along with her doll house.  This week she decided to name them.  They are Mom, Dad & Abby.  There have been several times this week that I have heard her calling “Mom” from the other room.  I walk into her room to see what she needs & I realize that she is playing with her dolls & her Abby doll is calling her Mom doll to come to another room in the doll house.  :0)

  • Abby created her first imaginary friend this week.  She was playing outside in her little playhouse & I heard her talking to “Mr. Boy.”  They had a grand time going in and out of the door on her playhouse & sliding down her slide.

  • We’ve been trying to prepare Abby for the arrival of her baby brother.  We’ve been telling her that he is growing in Mommy’s tummy.  Not too long ago we asked Abby where her baby brother was.  Very confidently she said, “He’s in my tummy.”  A couple of days later her stomach was upset & she told us, “The baby in my tummy hurts.”  I think we better work on explaining this concept a little better in the next two months.

A conversation I had with Abby this evening:

“Mommy, can I watch Barney ?”

“Abby, there is no electricity.”

“Daddy can make telektricity

“He can?”

“Daddy turn on nenlater (generator)”

“I guess that’s true.”

So, Daddy started the generator & we watched Elmo (what she actually

opted for once we got the TV on)

Should a 2 year old know about generators & electricity??  We have 2-3 days a week where we don’t have power from 7AM – 9PM, so our little girl has learned a lot about the joys of electricity in her 2 years of life.

We’ve had a slow day around the Hatfield house today.  It’s been nice !  Andy and Abby walked down to town this morning to have tea.  That is one of Abby’s favorite activities in town.  There isn’t an ice cream store or a hamburger restaurant (or really anything Western) in our town, so when Andy wants to do something special for Abby he takes her to town for a cup of hot tea.  It’s a real treat for her !  On their way back from town they met a few kids in the road.  Abby invited them over to play.  They had a lot of fun playing in Abby’s playhouse!  The kids did eventually get inside the house with her.

While we were outside with the kids, Andy realized that some bananas were growing on his banana tree.  He was really excited !  You can see Andy pointing at the two little bananas in the bottom picture.

I told Abby to stop and pose for the camera . . . this was the pose that she liked best :0)

We had a picnic lunch on our back patio today.  It was something fun to do on our not so busy day.

And we can’t leave Baby Hatfield out of this post . . . 31 weeks.  He’ll be here before we know it !

We’ve had a busy week this week.  Andy’s been goat shopping again & bought 30 more goats at a market this week.  We’re really happy about that because he hasn’t been able to find very many good goats at the past few markets that he’s been to.  Tomorrow, Andy will spend the day trying to get the goats immunized & get their ears tagged.  He’ll also spend the morning at the police station trying to get a copy of the police report we filed this weekend.  Somebody stole our license plate while Andy was at the market & so we’ve been “quarantined” to our house until we can get a copy of the police report.  Once we get the report we can drive to the Capital and try and get another license plate.  Fun !!

Abby is getting to be such a big girl.  We had another 2 year old milestone this week.  She moved from her crib into a “big girl” bed.  She absolutely loves it !!  She’s fallen out of the bed twice this week, but other than that she’s done real well with the transition.

Abby and the new baby are going to share a room.  We did a little rearranging this week in order to get all the furniture to fit in the kid’s room.  It was a bit of a challenge & it’s a tad bit crowded, but I think it will work !!

One of Abby’s favorite pastimes is to make tea or coffee.  Here she is enjoying a “tea party.”

Abby LOVES baboons !!  Here she is standing at the window in her room taking pictures of the pretend baboons that are in the tree outside.

Abby’s second haircut !!  We tried to take Abby to a hair salon to get her hair cut, but she cried as soon as we sat her in the chair.  So, that didn’t work out.  We have a volunteer that came down to stay in our town for a month.  She volunteered to cut Abby’s hair.  It worked out GREAT !!  We sat Abby at the table, put chocolate chips in front of her & let her watch Curious George on her DVD player.  She did great with her haircut !!!!  Thanks Liz !!!

Abby was sitting with Andy and me this morning & she turned to Andy and asked him what day it was.  He said, “It’s Sunday.”  She said, “OK” and then picked up his cell phone.  She said, “I’m calling Uncle Ben.”  She pretended to make the call & then she started talking.  Her conversation went like this . . .  “Uncle Ben, Hello.  What day is it ?  Saturday ?  No, you’re kidding me.  Stop it.   You’re kidding me.”  It was hilarious.  We were just cracking up !!!

The other funny thing Abby is doing this week is telling time.  You can ask her what time it is, she will look at her wrist like she’s looking at a watch and then she will say, “44.”  She definitely keeps a smile on our faces.

It’s been a little warmer around here this week.  Abby’s enjoyed playing in the water out in the yard.

Here she is trying to splash Mommy with the water.  She thought it was hilarious.

Andy has been busy this week trying to buy more goats for our goat project.  He tried to go to two markets this week.  The first market he tried to go to, he wasn’t able to make it all the way there.  He had to forge a river & the truck got stuck in a sand bar in the middle of the river.  It took them the entire day to get the car out of the river.  The second market was much more successful.  He was able to buy 16 goats.  We almost have enough goats now to hand out to our first two groups of ladies that are in our project.  He still has to buy goats for the 3rd & 4th groups that will start later this year.  Here are a couple of the goats he bought.  We found out this week that all of our new goats are disease free, so that’s a HUGE praise for us !!  We’re so thankful !!

Koleta & Ababa went out this week to visit 13 of the ladies that are in our project.  We had to check and see if they had their goat pen built & we checked to see if they had planted the seeds we gave them in their garden.  All but 2 of the ladies had done what we asked them to do.  We were pretty happy about that.  It took us a while to visit all the homes.  We have to go from area to area & ask around to find out where all their huts are.  It’s a tedious process, but it will be well worth it in the long run.  Here we are checking the garden.  They put leaves or dead grass on top of the new growth until it is a few inches tall.

One of the ladies invited us into her home for lunch.  She made us wheat injerra and eggs.  Here she is cooking the injerra.

It’s hard to believe that we’re already half way through 2008.  We’ve been busy this past week running errands and trying to get a few things accomplished around the house.  We totally ran out of diapers last Friday and had to make an emergency trip into the Capital on Saturday to try and find some more.  We went from store to store & we were only able to find 49 diapers.  Crazy !!  Good thing we’re potty training right now.  I’m not sure what we’d do if Abby was in diapers 24/7.

Abby’s been really sweet lately.  Last night, she was lying down on the couch next to me.  She grabbed my hand and said, “Mommy, I love you . . . very much.”  It just melted my heart !!

Yesterday Abby was watching Beauty and the Beast.  She’s just now getting to the point that she has the attention span to watch an entire movie.  She tends to pick up lines from movies & then she will repeat them over and over for the rest of the day.  The line she picked up from Beauty and the Beast was, “My Father’s not crazy.”  It was hilarious.  She went around the entire day repeating that line.  I don’t think Andy thought it was quite as funny as I did, but it was really cute.

Today I was playing with Abby in her room.  She has a little doll house & she wanted me to come over and play in the doll house with her.  I went over & stepped into the doll house & Abby laughed and said, “Mommy, you’re too big.”  It was totally true, but I thought it was funny that she noticed.

Here are a few pictures from the last week.  Abby smiling for the camera.

It’s been raining quite a bit here lately.  Abby loves playing outside in the rain.

Abby lying down with all her friends.

Abby loves to read a book when she’s trying to go to sleep.

The other day she fell asleep while reading her book.
