I am so thankful for Abby’s school. I am reminded of this each afternoon when
I sit down with Abby for 20 minutes to work on her homework. This is usually my least favorite 20
minutes of the day. All she has to
do is go over flash cards, read 2 short books and write 5 spelling
words. It doesn’t seem that hard,
but if Abby isn’t interested in doing it then it is like pulling teeth to
get it done. I used to think I’d
love to be a “homeschool” Mom. I
looked forward to sitting around the table with my kids, teaching them and
knowing that their main influences each day were influences from a safe,
loving environment. This dream of
mine started changing when Abby was 4 years old. We were living out in the Countryside,
where there are not any schooling options other than homeschooling, and I
started doing an informal preschool program with Abby. She loved the idea of school. The first 2 or 3 minutes of school were
so much fun for both of us, but after that we hit a wall. My little girl only wanted to do things
if she could do them her way. I
really didn’t mind trying to be flexible and do things she would
enjoy. I tried to be creative and
work with her learning style, but it just didn’t work. I think “strong willed” is what most
people would call the wall we were running into each day. If Abby didn’t want to do something,
there was no amount of encouragement or bribing that would make her want to
do it. This is when I seriously
started considering how I was effectively going to homeschool my daughter. God knew exactly what he was doing when
directed our family to change jobs and move to the Capital last year. Abby started school in the Fall and she
has thrived in her Kindergarten learning environment. She does well with the peer pressure that
she has in her class. If her peers
are working on a coloring sheet, then Abby won’t be outdone, she’ll do it
too! She is doing so well in school.
All of her teachers are Believers & she has such a positive learning
environment. Each day as I sit down
with Abby to work on her homework, I thank God that Abby gets to go to school. I’m so thankful that she’s thriving in
this learning environment. And most
of all, I’m thankful that our relationship is not strained by us working in
a homeschool environment together.
This is not to say that I will never homeschool my kids, but at this
point in time, I really feel like this is the best decision we could have
made for our family. I am sooooooo
thankful for Abby’s school !!

We celebrated the twins first Birthday with a party
this past week. They turned one on
January 6th and we finally had an opportunity to celebrate their
birthday the end of January. We
started their party with a Spaghetti lunch (Haley right).

The twins had a fun Birthday Cake (made by Mommy) and
they each had their
own cupcake to eat for the celebration.

We’ve played pin the tail on the donkey at all our
children’s first Birthday parties. Here’s
Andy presenting the winner with a bag of coffee. In typical Horn fashion, you hold your
right arm with your left hand when you are shaking hands or giving someone
something.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted about Barci. Barci is one of Abby’s good friends. She’s 7 years old and she has downs
syndrome. She was born with a heart
defect and she needs surgery. The
surgery cannot be done by the Doctors here in the Horn. Over the years, we’ve tried numerous
times to help Barci get the surgery she needs. Many doors have opened over the years,
but it always seems to fizzle out.
Well, a new door has opened up for Barci. There is a doctor in Switzerland who does
heart surgery for children in 3rd world countries. We’ve just mailed Barci’s medical files
to him and he should receive them any day now. He is going to review her file and see if
she is a candidate for his program.
The surgery she needs gets harder to do as a child gets older. The more pulmonary hypertension she gets,
the less like it is that she will even be able to have the surgery. Please pray that this Doctor will approve
Barci for surgery at his hospital!!!
