False Banana Tree

(AKA - Inset Tree)

The people we work with are known for growing the false banana tree.  It is known as the Inset tree around here.  They use the tree to make a type of bread.  Here are some pictures

of the Inset Trees in our area and a look at how the people use them.

There is an inset tree field

growing to the right of this house.

hut and an inset tree field

Another Inset Tree Field

Cutting down the Inset Tree

Once the tree is cut down,

they cut the root off the tree

Cutting the root off the tree.  This is the mans part of the work.

Still trying to separate the root from the tree

They finally did it

Now they are separating all the

Different layers off the tree

The very center part of the tree is the only part they don’t eat.  This part they give to the animals.

Getting ready to shave some

of the dirt off the root of the tree

This is the woman’s part of the work.

Shaving all the pulp from the tree.

They have to pound the tree pretty hard to get all the pulp off

Making sure they get every last bit off the leaves

They use their feet to hold the leave while they get the rest of the pulp off

They have a small ceremony to Thank God once they are finished with their work.

Final Product.  It looks delicious, huh?

Andy being served a little bit of the final product.  Mmmmm.
